Jean-Baptiste Gaston de France, duc d'Anjou
"Monsieur," brother of King Louis XIII
Carousing – Master
Gaston is the brother of King Louis XIII and heir-presumptive to the throne of France should the childless Louis die. Called simply “Monsieur,” the traditional title of the King’s brother, Gaston (b. 1608) is a bon vivant, wildly popular with the people of France and adored by his doting mother, Marie de’ Medici. He is at once ambitious and irresponsible, with a taste for debauched excess.
Surrounded by a cadre of young nobles, until recently his closest ally was Jean-Baptiste d’Ornano, comte de Montlaur, the prince’s personal governor, but in May 1626 the Maréchal d’Ornano was arrested by order of the king for misconduct. Monsieur is said to be furious at the affront from his brother.
