Campaign of the Month: August 2011
Le Ballet de l'Acier
- In April, at the continuing insistance of the queen mother, the king summons Cardinal Richelieu, the queen regent’s minister of state and war, to join the royal counsel as a minister without portfolio. The cardinal immediately begins to undermine the head of the council, the aged La Vieuville.
- After months of Cardinal Richelieu’s whisperings, the king dismisses La Vieuville in August amid charges of incompetence and installs Richelieu as the head of council. The cardinal now controls the reins of state.
- At Richelieu’s urging, the king orders François-Annibal d’Estrées, marquis de Coeuvres to take command of a force including companies from the Normandy, Vaubecourt, and d’Estrées regiments and three regiments of Swiss mercenaries and march across the Alps to join the Grisons in retaking the Valtelline from the Spanish. The queen mother is outraged at the alliance with the Protestant Grisons against the Catholic Spanish.
