Campaign of the Month: August 2011
Le Ballet de l'Acier
The Gardes Françaises is the ranking infantry regiment in the royal army, occupying the center of the French battle line on campaign and the far right on parade, both positions of honor. They are also responsible for protecting the outer works – doors, gates, and walls – of the royal residences when not on campaign.
The ‘colonel’ of the French Guard regiment is usually a marshal of France, and the ‘captains’ most often hold the rank of colonel. Unlike the cavalry of the king’s household, the soldiers of the French Guard regiment are not nobles but rather common soldiers who distinguished themselves, earning the right to serve in this most elite infantry formation.
