Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus
Created through the merger of two orders, the traditional Savoyard ducal order of Saint Maurice, established in 1434, and the venerable but declining papal order of Saint Lazarus under their joint grand master, Duca Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus (Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro) is a religious military order similar to the Knights of St John on Malta and St Stephen in Tuscany. The order maintains a small fleet of galleys and is charged with protecting Christian lands and ships from the Turks and the Barbary corsairs and rescuing Christians from captivity at the hands of the infidels.
The knights wear both the white cross of Saint Maurice and the green cross of Saint Lazarus as their device.
