Order of the Golden Militia
Originally an award of the title of count palatine by the Holy Roman Emperor, the Order of the Golden Militia was refounded by Pope Pius IV in 1559 as an honorific decoration of those of distinction in the service of the Church. Granted by the pope to men of distinction in pursuits ranging from theology and education to the science and arts to warfare and governance, the order carries no specific duties.
