Campaign of the Month: August 2011
Le Ballet de l'Acier
Founded in 1565 by Sir Thomas Gresham, and granted a royal charter in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Exchange was modeled on the bourse (stock exchange) of Antwerp, where Gresham served as the crown’s factor. Gresham offered to build the Exchange out of his own fortune, if the City of London would provide a suitable location; land was donated by the city and the mercers guild for the project.
In addition to providing services to brokers, the Royal Exchange houses a variety of shops catering to wealthy of London; it also attracts its share of idlers among the gentry.
