Tour de Saint Jean
Located on the north side of the Vieux Port, overlooking the entrance to the cove, is the tour de Saint-Jean. Built in the 12th century, this small fortress is a commandery of the Knights of Saint John under the responsibility of the bailli de Marseille. A watchtower was added in the 15th century by le bon roi (good king) René I, the count of Provence, to improve the port’s defenses.
The massive chain which protects the port at night is anchored at the base of the tour de Saint-Jean.
