Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith

Established in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV, the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide) is a function of the Pope’s curia concerned with promoting the spread of Catholicism. The Propoganda, as the congregation is known, coordinates missionary work on behalf of the Church, including missions to Protestant countries in Europe, to non-Catholic churches (such as the Orthodox and Armenian churches in the East), and to non-Christian peoples around the world.

The Propoganda consists of a council of cardinals headed by a prefect. One of the founders of the Propoganda, Cardinal Barberini, became pope shortly after its creation; the Propoganda enjoys tremendous influence in Rome.
