Collège de rhétorique et de poésie françaises

Founded in 1323 as the Consistori dels Sept Trobadors to preserve the Provençal verse of the legendary troubadours, this Toulousain college of poetry and rhetoric sponsors the Floral Games (jeux floral or jocs florals ) an annual poetry competition held each year on 1 May. Prizes in the form of flowers are awarded by a panel of seven judges for achievement in different categories of poetry; the golden violet (violet d’aur) is the top prize of the competition. Poems are judged in accordance with the Leys d’amor drafted in 1337 and other treatises on poetry prepared by the college.

Bowing to cultural prevalence, he college supports poets who work in both Provençal and French.
