Îles du Frioul
This archipelago of four islands is situated just off the coast of Marseille. The islands shelter the port from the Mediterranean and serve as bastions protecting the roads of Marseille.
The four islands are Pomègues, Ratonneau, If, and Tiboulain. Pomègues, the largest of the four islands, and Ratonneau, the second largest, align roughly north-south, like a long breakwater. If lies slightly to the east, within the roads of Marseille, and the tiny islet of Tiboulain lies to the west.
The islands served as a point of defense for Marseille since its earliest days. Forts stand on Ratonneau and If; the chateau d’If also serves as a notorious royal prison.
