Place d'Accoules

Located immediately adjacent to the Église Notre Dame des Accoules, this is the traditionl main market square of Marseille. It is much smaller than its counterpart in other cities, such as Les Halles in Paris, in part because the topography of Marseille, situated on a steep hillside, makes large public spaces prohibitive outside of the relatively flat areas near the quays of the port and in part because of the existence of more specialized shopping areas such as the large and small butcheries and the fish market.
