Campaign of the Month: August 2011
Le Ballet de l'Acier
Originally known as the Lacydon, the narrow cove with its imposing promontories and a convenient supply of fresh water became the site of the original Greek settlement of Massalia over two millenia ago.
The port of Marseille is one of the busiest in France, after Rouen and La Rochelle, the gateway of French trade with the Mediterranean. It is also home to the French galley squadron which protects the coasts of Provence and Languedoc.
The entrance to the port is protected by the Tour de Saint Jean, a commandery of the Knights of Malta, and the Tour de Saint Nicolas. A great chain is stretched across the mouth of the cove each night.
