Advantages and Secrets represent many of the themes common to swashbuckling characters in books and movies. They may offer a connection between the character and the setting, through an institution or a non-player character, suggest possible goals or motivations or provide an approach to roleplaying the character, or provide a resource for the character to utilize during the game in pursuing their goals or to aid friends and allies. Advantages and Secrets may describe something from a character’s past, but perhaps more importantly they may point toward a direction for the character’s future.

A player choosing Advantages and Secrets may consider ways to integrate the two; for example, a character may be Blackmailed to spy on his Contact. Novel ways of connecting Advantages and Secrets are encouraged. Players may also, with the Gamemaster’s approval, create a character concept which requires more than one Advantage and Secret at start.
