Guéret

Situated on a braod plateau in Basse-Marche, Guéret is the capital of the province of La Marche. During the seventh century the site was the location of the abbey of Pardulphe, later Saint Pardoux; the abbey was sacked by the Vikings in the ninth century, and the town which would become known as Guéret was built afterward.

Guéret is known for its stonemasons, as is the whole of La Marche, and its granite quarries.
