Principauté d'Orange

Located on the Rhône River in the northeast of Languedoc, the Principality of Orange is a sovereign enclave within France. Originally an independent county, the fief was raised to a principality of the Holy Roman Empire in 1163. The Dutch House of Nassau inhereited the fiefdom in 1544, and the stadtholder is the Prince of Orange.

The principality served as a Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion, and continues to be a haven for Huguenots in the southeast of France. It is enclosed on three sides by the Comtat Venaissin.
